We found ourselves holding this peculiar fruit, turning it over in our hands like some kind of botanical puzzle. The wings - and yes, they're actually evolved sepals, which we had to look up - catch the air in a way that makes you want to drop it from increasingly high places just to watch it spiral down. It's hypnotic, really, the way it tumbles.
The tree itself is native to the American tropics, and here's where it gets interesting: it's essentially running a protection racket with ants. It feeds them with its sap, and in return, they live on it and keep the predators at bay. We found this arrangement oddly civilized, like a very small, very efficient business partnership happening right there on the bark. The Kochi prefectural Makino Botanical Garden, Inc. supervised this whole operation, which somehow made us trust it more.
There's something about institutional oversight that suggests someone knew what they were doing.
