Paper is a patient medium. It will wait around for years while you decide whether you are an art person, a cookbook person, or a person who owns a book about handcrafted objects that made America. This collection politely refuses to make you choose. There are books about museums devoted to Wes Anderson, books about jewelry, books about hot springs, and a cookbook that takes the position that boiling an egg is a subject worth taking seriously. All of them full of other people's words.

The greeting cards are the opposite. They arrive mostly blank, the messages left to you, a small dare wrapped in nice paper. No one is going to write "Happy Birthday" on your behalf, and the card seems to know this, waiting with all the patience the books have. A honeymoon card from a motel, a spicy card for a mother, a card for a friend who likes meatballs. You bring the words. We cannot help you with those.
